“The return to Albania’s communist past brings also the remembrance of a deep darkness. The forced-labour camp in Spaç, an open wound of our history, was a place where freedom and rights were violated and around 2,000 men, but also their families, were treated in an inhuman manner. Today the effort to understand this heavy past is necessary so that it never repeats EVER.”
Dr. Gentiana Sula, Chairwoman of AIDSSH
The page www.spac.al has been established by the Authority for Information on Former State Security Documents (AIDSSH). The working group that was created by Order no. 22, dt. 06.02.2023, within the framework of the 50th anniversary of the Spaç Revolt, in addition to other tasks and activities, also prepared the online page dedicated to the camp–prison Spaç.
For the collection of materials, AIDSSH has used documents from its archive and the testimonies that former political prisoners in the camp–prison of Spaç have given to this institution. AIDSSH has collaborated with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which made available the archival fund for Spaç, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy and the company “AlbBakër” Sh.A., the General Directorate of Prisons, as well as researchers and experts who contributed during the preparation of commemorative activities and publications for the camp–prison of Spaç.
The staff of AIDSSH continues to work on updating the information and maintaining the page with the aim of creating as complete and clear a panorama as possible of one of the most notorious prisons and forced-labour camps of the dictatorship. AIDSSH welcomes the contribution of every individual, institution or organization that has information about the camp–prison of Spaç and wishes to share this information on www.spac.al. It is enough to click on Become part and our staff will be at your disposal.
