Testimonies
Excerpt from the testimony of former political prisoner Ylber Merdani given for AIDSSH. Ylber Merdani, born on 28 May 1940, in Korçë. In 1965 he was sentenced by the Librazhd court and dismissed from his job as a teacher, due to a series of writings characterized as pessimistic in nature. He continued to write what he lived. The poem “A Moonlit Farewell”, written in 1965 in Stravonjë, was followed by other creations written during the time when he was interned in the village of Pulahë of Opar, in 1967. His ideas in the writings: “The Convicts”, “Monologue of a Suicide”, “The Mountains”, “To Sister and Brother for Their Birthday”, etc., became the cause for the charge of “agitation and propaganda against the people’s power”. After internment he was arrested on 9 June 1969 and by decision of the Korçë District Court he was sentenced to eight years of imprisonment in Spaç, where he was also involved in the revolt of 1973.
