Letters from Prison
Vangjel Lezho
By Decision No. 5, dated 2–06.XII.1963 of the Supreme Court, he was sentenced on the charge of treason, terrorist acts, and agitation and propaganda, on the basis of Articles 64, 67-10, 14, 73/1 of the Penal Code, to 25 years of imprisonment. He was re-sentenced in May of the year 1979 to death by firing squad, on the charge of agitation and hostile propaganda committed in cooperation, provided for by Articles 55/I and 13 of the Penal Code.
Excerpt from the letter written by Vangjel Lezho in the Spaç prison-camp, during the time he was serving his sentence, addressed to Ramiz Alia, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party, bears the date 01.08.1978. In May of the year 1979 he was re-sentenced to death by firing squad.
“…You as leadership have grown old, physiologically, but by deceptive and self-deceptive fate, you have also aged the people with its eternal youth in its bosom. You did not betray your fate, but you betrayed the aspirations and the initial inspiration of the people, which against the background of your luxury and doctrinaire vices is suffering as the great Roman philosopher Seneca says—Fire!
This is called irony of fate, both at your address of the <> of the CC and at the address of the people. You promised the people scientific socialism and served it a feudal socialism, doctrinaire, which day by day more is tearing off its own masked face and is bringing to light historical criminality and failed incapacity not to understand the dialectical and materialist flow of human history as a whole and of the Socialist Camp with the USSR in particular. Charlatanism has no horns. Therefore, even the toy of the supposed betrayal of the USSR did not need horns. It sufficed only to go out on the tribune of the 81 parties in Moscow and to inform the world about some conversations about wheat…”
