Ylber Merdani
Testimonies
Excerpt from the testimony of former political prisoner Ylber Merdani, given to AIDSSH. Ylber Merdani, born on May 28, 1940, in Korçë. In 1965, he was sentenced by the Librazhd court and dismissed from his job as a teacher due to a series of writings considered pessimistic in nature. He continued to write about his experiences. The poem “Një lamtumirë e hënëzuar” (“A Moonlit Farewell”), written in 1965 in Stravonjë, was followed by other works composed during his internment in the village of Pulahë, Opar, in 1967. His writings, including “Të dënuarit” (“The Convicts”), “Monologu i një vetëvrasësi” (“Monologue of a Suicide”), “Malet” (“The Mountains”), and “Motrës dhe vëllait për ditëlindje” (“To Sister and Brother for a Birthday”), led to charges of “agitation and propaganda against the people’s power.” After his internment, he was arrested on June 9, 1969, and by decision of the Korçë District Court, he was sentenced to eight years in Spaç prison, where he also took part in the 1973 revolt.
