Post-Revolt

• The events that took place in Unit 303 in Spaç prompted the implementation of stricter measures against political prisoners. Considering the situation, and with the aim of identifying and documenting the participants in the revolt, under the order of the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, several intelligence-operational-investigative measures were taken, which included: Who were the participants in the revolt? How did the revolt begin, and what caused it? How extensive was the hostile activity of the prisoners, the slogans that were raised, and information regarding the raising of the flag.

• A total of 68 prisoners were immediately arrested. Between May 23–24, 12 of the prisoners were tried by the Criminal College of the Supreme Court, which ultimately sentenced defendants Skënder Daja, Hajri Pashaj, Pal Zefi, and Dervish Bejko to death, while the other defendants received 25 years of imprisonment, in addition to their previous sentences. Further sentences followed for around 70 prisoners who were sent to the Tirana investigative authorities immediately after the revolt was forcibly suppressed.

• All prisoners of the Re-education Unit were interrogated to analyze their behavior. They were to be studied based on materials collected by the intelligence service, which would later be handed over to the investigators, with the aim of documenting the hostile activities organized during the outbreak of the revolt

• Intelligence operations were intensified based on shifts, brigades, and rooms.

• Military measures were strengthened by the command to increase security in the Unit and to prevent any sharp tendencies.

The end of the revolt did not change the difficult conditions for the prisoners; on the contrary, the Spaç camp-prison became even harsher. Nevertheless, it represented the face of the struggle against the regime, against organization, unity, and resistance—even in places where achieving results was impossible, in prison.
